One of the unique elements of using the indoor cycling app, ROUVY, is the ability to use the platform to ride real routes – without having to leave home.

But how effective is riding on ROUVY to prepare for a real life event? We caught up with a couple of age group triathletes who used the indoor cycling platform as part of their training for Challenge Roth. Plus, they share their insights on how to make the most out of cycling on ROUVY.

How comparable is riding routes on ROUVY to the real thing?

Nathalie: “I’ve been using ROUVY to prepare for Roth and get used to the bike course as I haven’t raced there before. I did the same with Challenge Almere last year and it worked super well. I was able to see and practice the climbs (although there weren’t many in the Netherlands) and turns. So I’ve been using ROUVY in winter after work on or rainy days.”

“The roads [on ROUVY] are identical to real life. I compared the routes on there with ones I’ve already ridden in reality, and you don’t notice a difference.”

Robrecht: “I’ve used ROUVY to prepare for Roth. It’s very useful to know the climbs and the dangerous points. I always try to ride my upcoming races on ROUVY – or at least parts of them. It’s amazing how accurate it is. I tested it riding a route indoors on ROUVY and then outdoors (IRONMAN Frankfurt 90km loop) and there was only 1 minute difference between both rides.”

Top ROUVY routes and workouts

We recently put together our top picks of the best ROUVY workouts to get ready for Challenge Roth – so we were keen to see how these Roth-ready age groupers have been using the platform to prepare.

Nathalie: “My favourite workouts on ROUVY are Threshold Stacks, Stairs and Sweets. Or I use the ‘just ride’ mode.”

Robrecht: “I was doing IRONMAN virtual races during the pandemic, and I don’t like comic visuals so being able to do rides and climbs worldwide with real visuals was amazing. There are some amazing workouts on ROUVY that you can do a couple of times a week to enhance your FTP or build your endurance.”

“There are also very nice climbs such as the Passo Giau from Italy. But my favourite workouts are races of about 30-40km.”

How to enjoy riding on ROUVY

If you’re just getting started on ROUVY, we asked Nathalie and Robert for their top tips to make the most of indoor cycling on the platform.

Nathalie: “Take advantage of the fact that ROUVY recorded roads all around the world. There’s Challenge Family bike courses, and many more – including routes from La Vuelta and parts of the Tour de France. Riding all these different routes will really help you to level up your training game!”

Robrecht: “Make your pain cave attractive. Don’t forget a fan, and have a table next to you so you can have your cell phone, drinks, food etc. And don’t forget the music!”

“Try to do some races or group rides too. You quickly make friends over Strava after the race.”

Race day ready for “the mother of all triathlons”

Finally, we wanted to find out what it was about Challenge Roth that inspired Nathalie and Robert to get their names on the start list this year.

Nathalie: “I went to Roth last year as a spectator, and I was immediately impressed and hooked by the vibes and the ambience at the race venue. Having experienced the race as a spectator was already amazing. But taking part as an athlete will push the experience to another level!”

Robrecht: “Roth is the mother of all triathlons in Europe. There are more spectators and participants than inhabitants. Every shop you walk into, people are supporting you. You feel welcome everywhere.”

“The atmosphere during the race is just amazing – you get goose bumps on Solarer Berg! And of course, the finish line is the best in triathlon.”
