GB Age-Group roundup from ETU Sprint Distance Champs

As I hope you will already have seen (click HERE if not!), there was British Elite success on Sunday in Kazan, Russia at the 2019 ETU Sprint Triathlon European Championships, courtesy of Gordon Benson and Sam Dickinson.

The Age-Group races followed on Sunday and with the final results now published, I can now do our traditional ‘scores on the doors’ look at the British Age-Group team podium results.

First up, a quick look at the entries. The 410 starters were dominated by just two countries – and if you can take some good news from that, for a change the Brits were not even close to being the largest team. The home nation, Russia, provided 253 athletes, followed by Great Britain with 118 and then only Germany (15) in double figures. Thus, Russia and Great Britain in combination provided more than 90% of the starters between them.

Things aren’t quite as one-sided when looking at the medal table (below). Great Britain lead the way (31) with Russia next (25), those 56 medals accounting for 75% of the Gold / Silver / Bronze issued – but while they didn’t travel in large numbers, the 15 German athletes collected eight medals between them (and another three athletes finished fourth), while in total 10 nations made a podium appearance.

Last year in Glasgow, David Pearson (20-24) was the fifth fastest Age-Grouper overall and he matched that this time around. He had four other Brits finished ahead of him last year, but not this time, as he was the fastest Brit in Kazan. That was enough for him to move from Silver in 2018 to Gold in 2019 in his category.

The fastest British female athlete was Holly Dixon (20-24), who finished just one second ahead of Hayley Rigby (25-29). Only Maltese athlete Hannah Cutajar (25-29) was quicker than the British pair, finishing in 1:07:17.
