The IRONMAN Pro Series heads to Lake Placid this weekend with 5,000 points up for grabs – and a $125,000 event total prize purse.

Returning champions Danielle Lewis and Trevor Foley of the USA headline what looks certain to be a competitive race contested by a deep field on both the men’s and women’s side.

They will do battle with the likes of fellow American Jackie Hering, Spain’s Marta Sanchez and US-based Holly Lawrence of Great Britain, with Aussie Cameron Wurf and American duo Matthew Marquardt and Matt Hanson leading the charge on the men’s side.

Plenty of rivals for Danielle

Lewis, who currently sits fourth in the Pro Series standings, earned her first full-distance IRONMAN victory in a thrilling come-from-behind win in Lake Placid last year.

But Hering finished just behind her that day, when she also ended the season runner-up in the standings, and goes into this weekend’s race on a high after her triumph at IRONMAN Cairns so is looking to make it back-to-back wins.

Spain’s Sanchez, who sits sixth in the Series, will also be looking to shine in her first North American appearance following early season success that saw her place second at the IRONMAN South Africa African Championship in March.

Making her full distance debut in Lake Placid will be 2016 IRONMAN 70.3 World Champion Holly Lawrence, who has just returned to racing following the birth of her first child last year.

Other potential challengers include Norway’s Solveig Løvseth, who is currently seventh in the standings and was brilliant on her IRONMAN debut in Hamburg, Dutch powerhouse Lotte Wilms, and IRONMAN New Zealand champion Regan Hollioake from Australia, who finished fifth in Lake Placid last year. Sarah True won here in 2022 and is also returning.

Pressure on Foley

On the men’s side, it’s Foley who will have the target on his back after his win here last year. He ran an incredible 2:36:31 marathon split to capture his first full-distance victory of the year in that race and will be the one to beat.

But he will face plenty of competition, with Wurf currently sitting second behind Kristian Blummenfelt in the Pro Series standings and eager to make an impression on his debut here.

Marquardt finished second to Foley at Lake Placid last year and has already won IRONMAN Cairns this season, making him a strong contender too.

Veteran triathlete Hanson has been here three times before but is still looking for his first win, while Denmark’s Kristian Høgenhaug is racing here for the first time, though has had a busy recent schedule

He was hugely impressive finishing second at the IRONMAN Frankfurt European Championship triathlon last month.

France’s Leon Chevalier, New Zealand duo Braden Currie and Mike Phillips, Italy’s Mattias Ceccarelli and South Africa’s Bradley Weiss are also all hoping to be in the mix in New York’s Adirondack Mountains.
