It’s been a tough start to 2025 for Cam Wurf with the Aussie star falling foul of triathlon’s rule book for the second time in a massive race.
Back in April the pro cycling ace was disqualified from IRONMAN 70.3 Oceanside for speeding (yes, you read that right) on the bike – ending his hopes of a profitable day in California.
On Sunday in Maryland, Wurf was paying the price for an infraction again as he picked up a two-minute drafting penalty, scuppering his hopes of figuring at the business end of IRONMAN 70.3 Eagleman.

Cam, who was penalised just as he was building momentum on the bike, ended up finishing 10th and admitted afterwards that he needs to re-acquaint himself with the rules of swim/bike/run.
Looking visibly confused as he was forced to sit out two minutes in the penalty tent, Wurf will now prepare for his next event by taking a little time out to check on the regulations when it comes to drafting.
Silver linings for Cam
Despite the frustration of falling foul of the officials, the current IRONMAN Pro Series leader believes his efforts in other parts of the race will serve him well as he looks ahead to the rest of 2025.
“I felt pretty fast today when I wasn’t standing still,” he joked on his Instagram account. “I obviously need to re familiarize myself with the rule book.
“On the bright side, a 1:15.24 half marathon is a 3min PB for me, who says you can’t teach an old dog new tricks?
“It’s been a topsy turvy start to the season thanks to total uselessness on my behalf. Feels like my fitness is building nicely for an exciting summer of racing that lays ahead.”
For Wurf, this was a second top-10 finish of the season, following the eighth that he achieved at the Memorial Hermann IRONMAN Texas North American Championship in April, and it was enough to launch him to top spot in the series rankings.
Norway’s Kristian Blummenfelt and German Jonas Schomburg currently sit behind him in second and third.
