Double Gold on the Gold Coast for Edward Castro

As well as Vincent Luis winning the race and Mario Mola a third consecutive World Championship (HERE), the final day of competition at the ITU World Triathlon Grand Final Gold Coast also saw the ITU Triathlon Standard Distance Age-Group World Championship. Several British athletes were backing-up after racing on Thursday over the Sprint Distance.

Three British Age-Group athletes secured medals in both races, with the headlines going to Edward Castro (who also won at the ETU European Sprint Distance Championships in Glasgow), who was the only Brit to earn the double Gold across both formats of Sprint (draft-legal) and Standard (non-drafting). Edward was also the fastest British athlete across all divisions and finished second fastest Age-Group athlete overall too.

Other multi-medal winners included Penny Rother (60-64) and Peggy Crome (75-79), who both added Standard Distance Silver to the Gold that they earned on Thursday over the shorter distance.

As well as Edward, the British team won two further Gold medals via Owain Roberts (35-39) and Sarah Barratt (70-74).

For Sarah that adds to previous Gold medals in London (2013), Cozumel (2016) and Rotterdam (2017), an incredibly impress run of consistency (having also earned Bronze / Bronze / Silver / Silver in 2009/10/11/12 too!).

Owain – who lives in Australia – was also the second fastest British athlete, just 44 seconds slower than Edward, which made him the fifth fastest Age-Group athlete overall.
