South West based race organiser announces closure
Due to “costs and an ever increasing competitive market place”, Freak Events (www.freakevents.co.uk) ends events organising business
One of the disappointing to hear pieces of news we heard over the Christmas and New Year period was the announcement from Freak Events that they were ending their events business with immediate effect.
Based in the South West, Freak Events produced a range of multisport and running events, many of which had a innovative / different to the ‘norm’ aspect to them. These included the Peaky Freaky Duathlon and in 2016, the Equalizer Middle Distance Triathlon. That event offered a £5,000 prize purse in a Battle of the Sexes format.

This is, we believe, perhaps a sign of things to come. While the last Triathlon Industry Association survey indicated a record total of ‘race starts’ in 2015, our own (non-scientific…) feedback from a mumber of race organisers who we speak too, independently, has suggested that filling races / maintaining numbers has become a challenge in recent years. Will that be reflected in the next survey results?
