The Sebamed Brighton and Hove Triathlon’s children’s races are back for 2018 and will be bigger and better than last year. Entries are already rapidly rising. First introduced into the 2017 event, the kid’s race is set to double in size this year.

The open water sea swim, closed wide cycle course and flat Hove seafront run will test those active children who already love triathlon, and the shorter distances will allow beginners to comfortably experience the sport for the first time. As such, this triathlon is ideal for all abilities and perfect for those just coming into the sport.

The children’s races will take place on Sunday 16 September alongside the adults racing on Brighton and Hove’s closed-road course.

Children will race over the following distances:

  • Tristart (8yrs) – 50m swim / 1.4km bike / 500m run
  • Tristar 1 (9-10yrs) – 100m swim / 4km bike / 1.5km run
  • Tristar 2 (11-12yrs) – 200m swim / 4km bike / 1.5km run
  • Tristar 3 (13-14yrs) – 200m swim / 4km bike / 2.5km run

For the younger budding triathletes (3-8yrs), Saturday 12 noon, 15 September will play host to the Scootathlon, a scoot/bike/run along Hove Promenade for which there are also various distances, below:

  • 3yrs – 100m scoot / 100m bike / 100m run
  • 4yrs – 200m scoot / 200m bike / 200m run
  • 5-8yrs – 300m scoot / 300m bike / 300m run

John Lunt, Brighton and Hove Triathlon Event Director, commented: “I’m very excited for our Children’s Triathlon to grow as triathlon teaches discipline, requires multiple skills and encourages determination. But most importantly, it’s an extremely fun way to keep youngsters healthy and active.”

Sebamed Brighton and Hove Triathlon will take place for the third successive year on 15-16 September 2018. With the 2017 race seeing a 20% increase in competitors, 40% female entrants and 43% beginners, the event is set to continue expanding. The Children’s Triathlon will take place alongside the main event, with relay options and the UK’s first ‘Rainbow’ Wave in support of diversity and inclusion in sport.

Supporting triathlon in the local area are Brighton Tri Club who hold taster sessions in conjunction with GoTri in the summer, keep an eye on their website for more details closer to the time. They also have a Tristar contingent who meet regularly for coached sessions throughout the week.
