IRONMAN 70.3 Bariloche debut wins to Terenzo Bozzone (NZL) and Alicia Kaye (USA).
Ahead of Sunday’s debut IRONMAN 70.3 Bariloche in Argentina, I said in the weekend preview:
Terenzo Bozzone (NZL) is listed as for this one which, given his fantastic win at IRONMAN New Zealand on Saturday, you would assume makes his presence unlikely. But, this is Terenzo… and he is one of the absolute best at back-to-back racing!
Those words proved to be spot on – Terenzo did travel, did race and did win. With the leaders out of the swim, a trio of athletes (Bozzone, Kennett Peterson (USA) and Igor Amorelli (BRA)) reached T2 three minutes clear, and the Kiwi legend showed little sign of his Taupo efforts, hitting the front early and pulling away to what looks like a comfortable winning margin of over three and a half minutes.
Déjà vu
Performing back-to-back, in cross continent international races is nothing new – just last year Terenzo ended his year by finishing sixth in Kona and then shortly afterwards ended his year by going to 70.3 Los Cabos (win), Island House Invitational (second), 70.3 Bahrain (second) and IRONMAN Western Australia (win) over four consecutive weekends.
In 2016 Terenzo won IRONMAN Western Australia (also Sub-8), and then won 70.3 Bahrain a week later.
Next stop for Terenzo? IRONMAN 70.3 Campeche, Mexico… this coming Sunday! The touring continues…

Alicia Kaye takes the win
The opening 1.9km swim made it a race of four, with Pamella Oliveira (BRA), Alicia Kaye (USA), Dede Griesbauer (USA) and Romina Palacia Balena (ARG) four and a half minutes clear of the rest of the field. All change on the bike, as four became two with Kaye and Griesbauer putting a huge seven minutes into Oliveria, with Palacio Balena now almost 15 minutes in arrears.
More change on the run – Kaye remained out in front, but by the 14km mark her lead over Griesbauer was up to two minutes, with Oliveira more than halting her T2 deficit to sit less than three and a half minutes back. Into the last two miles, the fast-running Brazilian had passed the veteran U.S. athlete but would run out of time, literally, to catch Kaye, who took the win by just under a minute.
