British 10,000m Champion is heading to Berlin

Having won the British Senior 10,000m championships earlier this year with a stunning 27:51.94 at the Highgate Harriers Night of the 10,000m PBs event at Parliament Hill, the qualification of Alex Yee for the European Championships in Berlin was all but secured. The fastest British athlete over the distance this year (closely followed by Andy Vernon and Chris Thompson, who finished immediately behind him in a close finish at the Highgate event), the only potential question might have been whether or not he accepted that slot, balancing as he has been his Elite triathlon and running objectives.

Any decision there has now been formally confirmed and, as expected, Alex – along with Andy and Chris – was named yesterday by British Athletics as their three entries for the 10,000m in Berlin.

Having raced his first Diamond League event on Saturday (HERE), another great opportunity for the 20 year old Brit, and one I am personally very happy to see him accept. A fine talent in both sports, I’m of the view that what he is doing now is clearly working for him and, should a decision need to be made on whether to focus on triathlon or running, I don’t believe we are at the point yet.

At just 20 years old, barely 12 months after suffering a horrific bike crash in Italy, his recovery has been remarkable and his talent is there for all to see. Let him enjoy his sport and if and when any choices ‘need’ to be made, I’m sure that will be a decision for him and his coaching teams.
