Second place in the ‘100’ for 50-mile National Champion

100-mile debut results in National Championship Silver for ETU Middle Distance podium finisher

Second seemed to be a popular finishing position yesterday for British triathletes around the world in major competition.

For one former (temporarily!) triathlete, Kate Allan, for a change race planning didn’t have to involve travelling long miles to get to the start. The venue for the 2017 RTTC National 100-mile Time Trial Championship in Hampshire was not too far away from home – and covered roads she has raced on many times before. One thing was different however… this was her first 100-mile Time Trial. Not far to get to the venue… but 100-miles of riding to do once there.

Having won the ’50’ a couple of weeks back (read my interview with Kate about that HERE), ‘Super Mum’ would once again be up against her Drag2Zero team mate, Alice Lethbridge. Kate finished just 36 seconds ahead of Alice in the ’50’, but a week before that Lethbridge had improved the all-time 100-mile competition record to 3:42:37. This was going to be a tough challenge.

Experience would come out on top this time, but Kate has no regrets about her second place, commenting:

It makes 50 miles feel like a relative sprint, being as much about mental strength, as it is physical. I could not have given it any more, paced it well, kept focussed and used Rob for extra nutritional support on a very hot day. It’s safe to say I’ll be sticking with the shorter distances from now on however – my body will thank me for it!
